Patterson Little Red Riding Hood from Revolting Rhymes
The forest: strange, eery, mysterious, magnificent. A place of magic and surprise where nothing is quite what it seems.
You might think you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood, but this musical adaption of Roald Dahl’s wicked Revolting Rhymes turns this classic woodland tale into a cheeky, riotous adventure.
Performed by musicians from Chetham’s School of Music and conducted by Felicity Cliffe, this concert will feature the quaint story of Mr Bear’s Christmas as well as music from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi.
Perfect for children aged 7 – 107, these family concerts give children a fun introduction to the orchestra through music and storytelling.
Concerts will last approximately 1 hour.

Each year, RNCM’s In Focus series invites trailblazing composers to the RNCM. Behind the scenes, they work closely with staff and students, culminating in a compelling day of performances. This Autumn, we’re delighted to welcome Laurence Crane.
The innovative Brand New Orchestra lights up the stage to conclude our In Focus events. Join us for an evening featuring new orchestral works by our students, along with a performance of Laurence Crane’s West Sussex Folk Material, which explores the interplay of expansive music through deliberately limited and static elements.

Nature's Music - RNCM at The Manchester Museum
For one night only, musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music will transform Manchester Museum into an immersive experience where the allure of music meets the awe of nature.
Wander through the Museum’s collections as RNCM students perform live music, creating a soundtrack to our natural world that echoes from every corner.
Listen to the whispers of ancient stones in the Fossils and Dinosaur galleries. Experience the choruses of birds and bees in the gallery of the Living Worlds. Audio depictions of sun, rain, land, and sky come alive in the galleries of Egypt and Sudan, South Asia, and Chinese Culture before a not-to-be-missed performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending is unveiled in a rarely performed arrangement for violin and chamber choir.
You’ll also be able to put your own creativity into practice with an open-to-all crafting workshop.
And if this nocturnal voyage leaves you feeling parched, you’ll be able to grab a drink at the Museum Bar and hear sets from Trees.R.Good, K’in Ensemble, and the RNCM’s Community Chorus.
Explore Manchester Museum as never before and let Nature’s Music redefine your museum experience.
Felicity Cliffe will be performing in ‘Rock Piece’ by Pauline Oliveros and conducting ‘Second Song for Many’ by Tim Parkinson.

Travel through the timeline of trailblazing composers performed by our all-inclusive vocal ensemble NEW Voices, our virtuosic orchestra NEW Sinfonia conducted by some the RNCM’s most promising conductors.
Our journey begins in the present day with Jonathan Guy’s simmering fast moving Scherzo which blends Welsh folk with contemporary textures to create a fresh invigorating soundscape. NEW Voices joins our players as we take you deep into the romantic world of the Belle Epoch with Gabriel Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine and Jules Massenet’s Meditation (from Thais). Our musical travels end with the triumphant and uplifting baroque masterpiece Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi featuring our fantastic chorus and soloists Kathy Macaulay and Chris Simons.

Experience the immensity of La Mer/The Sea by Debussy, and see the symphonic sketches unfolding live in concert. Journey deeper into the captivating world of impressionism with Ravel’s suite Ma Mere l’Oye and the more modern lilting poetry of Susan Spain-Dunk’s Lament for string. Alongside the music of these early-20th-century pioneers is the romantic composer Max Bruch’s ever-popular Violin Concert No.1. played by prodigy violinist Tako Tkabladze.

This year we’re taking an in-depth look at the relationship we have with the planet we live on, asking ourselves what role could, and should, musicians and creative artists have in response to the climate emergency? See all events in our In Focus: The Climate Agenda.
Our innovative Brand New Orchestra takes to the stage to perform new orchestral works by our composition students alongside a performance of Gabriella Smith’s Tumblebird Contrails.
Reflecting on her inspiration for the piece, Gabriella points to a single moment when she was sat on the sand at the edge of the ocean, taking in the soundscape that surrounded her.

RNCM - Nature on Film: Early 20th Century Documentaries with Live Soundtracks
As we reflect on climate change and the natural world through this year’s theme, The Future is Green, we’re exploring unique opportunities to place the planet at the centre of our music-making.
Enjoy live screenings of early cinema’s most enduring nature films as our students compose and perform brand new works to accompany them. From mesmerizing time-lapse photography to ‘talkies’ that narrate stories about nature’s life cycles, this fascinating evening fuses students’ musical responses to the stories of nature that unfold before them.

Garrick Conducting Competition Final with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain
The final of NYBBGB’s second young conductors’ competition, supported by a donation from the Garrick Charitable Trust given in memory of Prince Philip, will be held live in Tidworth, Wiltshire, hosted by our partner organisation British Army Music.
The four finalists will be assessed by Lt Col David Barringer, Dr Robert Childs and Capt Andy Porter.
From the fifteen who entered, the final four have been selected and are: Andreas Ashikkis (25), Felicity Cliffe (29), Joshua Parkhill (24) and Craig Sanders (28).
Each of the finalists will be given 35 mins to rehearse one of the following well known brass band works; Resurgam – Eric Ball, Music for a Festival – Philip Sparke, Shine as the Light – Peter Graham, Dimensions – Peter Graham.
Following lunch, musicians from NYBBGB and British Army Band Tidworth will perform in open rehearsal under the direction of Capt. Andy Porter and Lt Col Dave Barringer.
